として --target i386 で portmap をビルドしてみてはどうでしょうか。
だけが見つかりました
サーバ側のportmapではないですが，Vine 3.1をNFSクライアントにした場合に
lockが上手く動かない(正確にはrpc.statdが動かなくてfcntl()が機能しな
い）ので，NFSボリューム上に配置したStarSuite 7（恐らく，
OpenOffice.orgでも同様）が起動しないという現象がありました．
＃この件は別便で投げた方が良いですかね？
その調査過程で，portmapのmanを見ていたのですが，
This portmap version is protected by the tcp_wrapper library. You have to
give the clients access to portmap if they should be allowed to use it.
To allow connects from clients of the .bar.com domain you could use the
following line in /etc/hosts.allow:
portmap: .bar.com
You have to use the daemon name portmap for the daemon name (even if the
binary has a different name). For the client names you can use the key-
word ALL, IP addresses, hostnames or domain names.
てなことが書いてあります．Vine3.1の/etc/hosts.allowと/etc/hosts.denyの
初期状態は空設定になってるので，これらをしかるべく適切に設定しないと
portmapは外部からのリクエストをちゃんと受けられないのでないかと思いま
す．
ちなみに，私の場合man statdを見た時に，同様の記述を見つけ，これらのフ
ァイルを設定したらrpc.statdが動くようになりました．
