Xorg.0.log, boot.log, dmesg を調べてみたのですが、
特に問題となるエラーは見つかりませんでした。
特に Xorg.0.log は、正常に動いている Vine 6.3 のものと比較して（眺めただけ）
見たのですが、特に問題はありませんでした。
そこで、
startx > startx_20170419-02.log 2>&1
としてエラーメッセージを収集したところ、下記のようにどうも gnome Desktop
の起動に問題がありそうだというところまで分かったのですが、エラーメッセージ
の内容がよくわかりません。
どなたかご教示頂けませんでしょうか？

X の起動に失敗していました。
GRUB ブートローダでランレベル3に設定すると起動出来ますが、
startx すると X の起動に失敗して、ブラックアウトします。
X のログを調べてみます。

OS を Other linux 3.x kernel (64bit) を選択することで起動できました。

Other linux 3.x kernel (64bit) のままにしましたが起動できません。
その他、Ubuntu や Cent OS を選択しましたがダメでした。
6.3 と 6.5
でカーネル以外に何か起動に関することで変更があったのでしょうか？
VMware のサポートに問い合わせたほうがいいかもしれませんが。
