まずは Linux Man Page Howto から。

この HOWTO の記述によれば、x という文字をどのように扱うかは
man コマンドなどの実装におまかせ、ということのようです。
Vine Linux 3.1 の man コマンド提供している man パッケージには
次のような情報があります。

ついでに調べてみると、Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (sarge) の man コマンドは
man-db というパッケージ名になっていて (バージョンは 2.4.2)、次の
ような情報があります。

あと sarge で man man してみたところ、オリジナルの作者はJohn W. Eaton
である旨がちゃんと書いてありました。
この sarge 環境では、man 7x X や man 1x xterm といった具合いに
x をつけて絞り込む指定ができます。
以下、 この sarge 環境で -d オプションをつけた場合の実行例を参考まで。
# 長くなるため grep でメッセージを絞り込んでいます。
$ man -d 1 xterm 2>&1 | grep matched
matched: /usr/X11R6/man/ja/man1/xterm.1x.gz
$ man -d 1x xterm 2>&1 | grep matched
matched: /usr/X11R6/man/ja/man1/xterm.1x.gz
$ man -d 7 X 2>&1 | grep matched
