さまざまな方からアドバイスをいただきました。

基本的に理解できていないところが多々ありますが、
プログラミングが当初の目的であり、ある程度fixしたので報告します。

の高橋さんのアドバイスに従い、VineLinux2.1.5をimgファイルで取りこみ、
MacCDR4.1で焼いて、インストールしました。apt-getが使えるようですが、
まだ試していません。:-)

NICについては、PnP（plag & play)をoffにしていましたが認識されないので、
modprobe ne io=0x300や、netcfgで設定したら認識するようになりました。

肝心のX Windowですが、インストール時にひとまずGeneric LCD Monitorだっけか、
1024x768で設定しておきました。この時グラフィックカードは質問してこなかった
ような記憶があります。インストール後、Xconfiguratorで自動で、S3 86C968を
検出しましたので、そのまま保存。1280x1024の256色よりは、1024x768の方が色数
が多くて見やすいので、そちらにしました。

のいわもとさんのアドバイスに従って、HorizSync, VertRefreshの値を変更しました。

ただ、MITSUBISHI RDT173Mは、1280x1024で使用しないとモニタが「1280x1024に変更
しなさい」としきりに画面ど真ん中にメッセージを表示するのでこれがストレス...。

XF86Configについては、Web + google で結構探し回りましたが、これ！という
設定は見つけきれませんでした。「これを参考に直してみて」というアドバイスが
あっても、私にはどこを直していいのか、わからないので今回は諦めます。

参考までにXF86Configを添付しておきます。

的を得ない質問で迷惑をおかけしましたが、大変助かりました。
